Why VehiCode is evolving the Free VIN decoder API plan

The original idea has not changed

VehiCode started with a simple product principle: developers should be able to try a VIN decoder API without a contract, a sales call, or a credit card.

That is still the direction. You can test the decoder without registration, create a Free account when you want an API key, and move to a paid plan only when the API is useful enough for a real workflow.

What early usage made clearer

After launch, real usage gave us a better view of the difference between trying the decoder, evaluating the API, building a small tool, and using VehiCode inside a production application.

Those are different jobs. A quick no-account decode should stay easy. A registered Free plan should give developers enough room to evaluate the API properly. Paid plans should support projects that need more volume and richer vehicle data.

The new plan structure

The plan path is now simpler: try VehiCode immediately, create a Free developer account when you need an API key, and upgrade only when your project needs more requests or paid data fields.

Anonymous access is for immediate testing. Free is for development and API evaluation. Starter is for prototypes and smaller applications. Business is for regular production usage with higher request volume.

Free should still be useful

We do not want the Free plan to become a decorative demo. It should give developers enough room to understand whether VehiCode solves their problem before they pay.

Free and anonymous responses focus on the core public vehicle report. Starter and Business API keys can unlock available premium fields such as technical specifications, dimensions, weight, and factory details when VehiCode has that data for the VIN.

Why paid plans exist

VIN decoding is not only slicing a 17-character identifier into fields. A useful vehicle data API also needs normalization, validation, reviewed decoding rules, enrichment, usage tracking, documentation, and a correction loop for data quality.

The paid plans help keep that work sustainable while preserving a meaningful way to start for free.

What comes next

The next work is practical: improve decoding coverage, keep refining vehicle data quality, expand enrichment where it is reliable, and make the API documentation and developer experience easier to use.

We will keep publishing product notes on the VehiCode blog, including integration updates and changes that may affect developers.

We are also preparing a larger partner integration. It may influence parts of the API over time, so we will document any meaningful changes clearly before they become important for production integrations.
